Before you dive into any home improvement project, do your research. I’ve helped clients who began a bathroom remodeling project and then abandoned it due to a lack of knowledge. What began as a vision for a relaxing, beautiful bathroom ended with frustration and a construction mess. No one wants that!
Tasks like plumbing and running electricity are often best left to the professionals. Most experienced DIYers can handle painting, decorating, and perhaps installing new sinks, toilets, or tubs. However, installing tile in a shower may be too much for a DIYer’s skillset. Let me help you.
If you’re planning a bathroom remodeling project, read my tips below. My goal is not only to sell clients on professional kitchen and bath remodeling, but equally, I want my clients to be satisfied with the cost, service, and finished work I provide. I hope my tips help you, whether you DIY the project or ROI handles the work for you.
Call me if you have additional questions or would like me to come see your bathroom. I’ll talk with you about your vision for the new bathroom, what’s possible and what isn’t, and my past experiences that may help you avoid problems or save money. Call me, Chris Duty at 682-337-1849, or email me at [email protected].
7 Bathroom Remodeling Tips for Homeowners
- Out of Commission
When remodeling, the bathroom must be off-limits to everyone in your home, including pets. There will be a higher potential for accidents if the bathroom remains in use. Everyone in your home should plan to use an alternate restroom during the remodeling. Put a sign on the door to remind kids and visitors that the bathroom is out of commission.
- Do Your Research
This is perhaps the most important and fun part of your project. Whether you prefer going to a showroom to see what’s popular in modern bathrooms or you simply explore online, with Pinterest and Instagram, for inspiration, definitely spend time conducting research. Find out what you like, dislike, and what’s within your budget. You may be pleasantly surprised about the possibilities!
- Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses
Once you’ve measured twice, drawn up plans, and purchased the materials for your project, don’t dive in until you take inventory of your DIY strengths and weaknesses. If you’re a DIYer who’s experienced with home remodeling, your skillset may be well developed. Maybe you can do it all yourself! But if there are parts of the job that feel overwhelming, don’t risk making costly mistakes. Call me, and I’ll bring in professionals to handle the tasks you either dislike doing or are inexperienced with.
- Protect Surfaces
You may think laying down tarps or brown paper over floors leading to the bathroom and the contractor’s entrance (garage, front door, or back door) isn’t necessary. But it is absolutely necessary.
Expect dust, dirt, and debris to abound during your bathroom remodeling project. If you paint, lay dropcloths and cover mirrors, counters, and cabinets. If contractors are coming and going, ask them to lay down protection on your floors and walkways. They should do it anyway, so don’t feel awkward if you have to ask. It can’t hurt to take some before photos of your floors, in case they get damaged.
- Protect Kids and Pets
Children should not be allowed in the bathroom during a remodeling project. The risk of accidental injury is higher when tools and construction debris are accessible. Kids are naturally curious, so show them the room if they ask, but make sure they know it’s off-limits without Mom or Dad.
Your fur babies have the run of the house, and rightfully so! But when you’re remodeling, don’t let Sparky watch. Keep all pets out of the bathroom for the extent of the project. Also, if you or your contractors will be going in and out of the house, you don’t want Sparky running out of your garage to chase a squirrel or tracking sheetrock dust onto your couch. Put your four-legged friends in your bedroom or backyard where they’ll be safe and sound.
- Find out if your homeowner’s insurance will cover the cost if you’re remodeling due to damage.
If a leaking roof, hot water heater leak, or plumbing failure caused water damage in your bathroom, your homeowner’s insurance may pay for part of the project. I work with insurance, so let me help you wade through the process.
- Hire a local, reputable contractor for the parts of your project outside your wheelhouse.
ROI has helped homeowners for a decade, and I’ve personally been in the contracting business since 1993. I have been doing hands-on remodeling for as long as I’ve been married, three decades, in the DFW area. My father and brothers have built structures, so I grew up around construction. I was raised in Colleyville and met my wife at Grapevine High School. When we married, I began working with my father-in-law in his painting contractor business and with two of my wife’s uncles who do bathtub refinishing and tile setting. Now I live in North Richland Hills and am a general contractor with ROI Construction, which is both reputable and local!
