15 Interview Questions for Homeowners to Ask Roofing Contractors

When looking for a reputable roofing contractor in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, people typically ask me these questions to ensure they find a reliable and trustworthy company, like ROI Construction and Chris Duty. I want to answer all of these common roofing questions here, in one place, for your convenience and education.

Here we go!

1. Are you licensed and insured?

  • Yes! In Texas, there is no state licensure for roofing contractors, but we are insured and are also members of reputable organizations that require integrity and quality from members. Feel free to read our Google Reviews!

2. How long have you been in business?

  • ROI Roofing and Construction has served homeowners and property owners with excellent service and a quality product since 2013. Chris Duty, as well as our roofing teams, have decades of experience in residential and commercial remodeling.

3. Can you provide references or reviews?

  • Absolutely. Some of Chris’ clients’ testimonials are here on this website. ROI’s reviews are also stellar and can be found on Google.

4. What kind of roofing materials do you recommend?

  • Selecting a roofing material will be your decision, but Chris will present options, bring samples, ask about HOA and city regulations if applicable, and answer all of your questions. From metal roofs to composite roofs to new, longer-lasting materials.

5. What is the timeline for my roofing project?

  • During the busy season, it can take up to 4 weeks to schedule, but the rest of the year, we should be able to get to you faster. Roofing a home takes, generally, 1-2 days.

Do you provide a written estimate?

  • Roofing is a different animal, when it comes to estimates, because of insurance. If you’re planning to pay cash for your roof or finance it, instead of relying on insurance, be sure to let Chris know. If, like most homeowners, you will rely on your homeowner’s insurance to cover all but your deductible, an estimate becomes obsolete. The insurance company will pay what it pays, regardless of the contractor you choose. By Texas State law, it is a felony for a roofing contractor to “eat your deductible.”

Any work outside of the scope of what insurance will cover will be brought to your attention before we do additional work. At that point, we need to determine whether the additional work is something insurance should cover. If so, we’ll work with you and your insurance company to adjust the claim.

  • If work outside of the scope of what insurance will cover will be paid by you, by cash or credit, Chris will provide you with a detailed estimate.
  • If you simply need a new roof, and you plan to use your homeowner’s insurance to cover the bulk of the cost, you should only have to pay your deductible.

7. Do you offer warranties on your work?

  • Yes. Your roofing materials come with a warranty, as does the ROI Roofing and Construction labor.

8. Will you handle the permits and inspections?

  • Absolutely. Our expert in this area, Miguel, is a phone call away if you have any questions or need to discuss correspondence from the city or your HOA.

9. Can you provide proof of your roofing experience?

  • ROI Roofing and Construction of Dallas Fort Worth has been in business since 2013. We hold many distinctions, including top ratings from roofing materials manufacturers and roofer organizations. In addition, you may want to read our Google Reviews. Upon request, Chris can provide references as well.

10. What will you do to protect my property during the roofing process?

  • We hang tarps over landscaping and lawn, and if there is potential for some of your property becoming damaged, we will ask you to move the property. If you have a swimming pool, we will tarp the entire pool. After your roof is completed, Chris, as well as the roofing and gutter teams, will run a magnet over your lawn all around your home.
  • We also protect exterior A/Cs with mesh that ensures the unit is protected, while allowing air to circulate.
  • Here’s a story for you. At one of his client’s homes, Chris learned that a paving stone had been broken. He went to Home Depot and purchased a replacement, and installed it. This is the level of integrity Chris believes you deserve from your contractor.

11. Are you a local company?

  • Yes! We are based in Fort Worth. After a tornado, strong winds, or thunderstorms, you’ve probably seen your street lined with roofers’ trucks. The salesmen go door-to-door, asking homeowners if they want a free roof inspection. Your doorbell may ring 20 times on a day like this!

WARNING: Many times, roofing contractors travel from Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, and beyond, selling roofs door to door. These contractors are not local, and if your property is damaged or your roof is sub-par, it would be a challenge to track down your roofing contractor. Many of these companies don’t stay in business year-round but only chase storms. Buyer beware!

  • While  “door knocking” is sometimes a good idea, Chris prefers word-of-mouth referrals from his clients. He also works with realtors and insurance agents, because they know he’ll treat their customers with utmost professionalism and courtesy.

12. How do you handle unexpected issues during the project?

  • The very nature of home improvement and construction is to have unexpected issues. Very rarely does a job go off as planned, without any hiccups. Usually, the hiccups come once the roof is removed, if the rafters are exposed. Things like broken rafters, mold and water damage, and A/C ducting issues are laid bare for all to see. Should we run across issues like this, we will alert your homeowner’s insurance provider and try to get it covered under “supplements.” In some cases, the revealed damage is not covered by insurance. At this point, Chris would have a conversation with the homeowners about how to fix it, why to fix it, and how much it should cost.

13. What is your payment schedule?

  • We work with your insurance, so we’re really on their timeline. You’ll need to pay your deductible for us to begin the work. From there, you’ll receive checks from your insurance company to pay ROI Construction. Chris will swing by your house to pick up payments or you can opt to pay online.

14. Do you clean up after the job is done?

  • Absolutely! We have to frame your new roof with a tidy lawn, right? So, we’ll remove all debris, run a magnet for nails, and leave your property better than we found it–because you have a new roof!

15. What sets you apart from other roofing companies?

  • Many would say this, but firstly, I think integrity sets us apart. Chris Duty enjoys working for ROI because Chris K., the owner of ROI, is a man of great integrity. It makes putting the client first easy, as it should be!
  • Secondly, education. ROI Roofing and Construction sends its salesmen, project managers, and administrators to educational events, so we can be on the forefront of what’s going on in the roofing industry. We’ve attended conferences and presentations, toured materials plants, and attended educational luncheons. We believe the more we know, the more information we can provide to you–and you deserve our best.
