What Is a Bonded and Insured Roofing Contractor?

It sounds impressive, but what does a roofing contractor’s bonding and insurance mean to the homeowner? In today’s blog, you’ll learn how a bonded and insured contractor protects you from potential financial loss. You’ll discover why bonding and insurance are important in a contractor, and why ROI Construction & Roofing invests in both. I’ll also share information about licensing and certifications for roofing contractors.

Bonded Roofing Contractor

The term “bonding” refers to having taken out a surety bond. So what’s a surety bond? Great question!

The contractor takes out a surety bond to protect the homeowner if subcontractors and other debtors are not paid. This ensures that the homeowner isn’t responsible for paying subcontractors and suppliers if the contractor fails to pay the debts. The bond pays the sub-contractors on behalf of the contractor and homeowner. Then the debt is held by the surety, not the homeowner.

The bond also covers the homeowner for unfinished projects, sub-par work, or other unkept promises made by the contractor.

A surety bond involves three parties: the contractor, the homeowner, and the surety bond provider.

Insured Roofing Contractor

Commercial general liability insurance for a contractor covers issues like worker’s compensation, client injury caused by the contractor, and damages to the homeowner’s property. It also protects the contractor from the financial obligations brought about by lawsuits, injuries, and damage to or theft of the company’s equipment and property.

To you, the homeowner, an insured roofing contractor has coverage to reimburse you if, for example, paint spills on your carpet, a window is accidentally broken, or similar issues occur. If a sub-contractor falls off your roof and incurs injuries, the contractor’s insurance policy (not your homeowner’s insurance) will be the first to cover related expenses.

Roofer Licensing in Texas

The person who cuts your hair has to be licensed. So do many professionals, from HVAC contractors to nurses. Roofing contractors, however, are not required to have bonding, insurance, or licensure to work in Texas. In fact, only 21 states require licensure for roofing contractors. Anyone can do roofing in Texas, but not all contractors have a good reputation.

Protect yourself by learning about your roofing contractor before signing any agreement or contract.
